Postdoctoral Researcher in Complex System Visualization (Temporary)
Postdoctoral Researcher in Complex System Visualization (Temporary)
The School of Architecture, Art and Design is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to pursue research in collaboration with design faculty in visualization for complex system mapping. Working with Distinguished Professor Peter Jones, the postdoctoral candidate will collaborate on studies to theorize, enhance and construct new concepts in visualization of systems to improve the adoption and understanding of large-scale mapping of complexity for policy proposals, complex strategic missions, and civic and institutional service programs.
We are interested in developing the next generation of system mapping for explanation that advances the contributions of synthesis maps and gigamapping, with new research in information design, visual semiotics, and distributed and augmented cognition. The candidate is expected to have a comprehensive understanding of systemic design and systems methodologies for representation and communication of complex ideas, with publications or portfolio to build upon while at Tecnologico de Monterrey. Knowledge of systemic design and complexity theory is desirable, but new theory can also be learned and developed within the scope of the postdoc position. The following other requirements are defined for the position:
Project-specific requirements include:
- Background: MDes or BDes, and Ph.D. in design studies, complexity science, or equivalent demonstrated design technical skills and equivalent doctoral studies in visualization
- The collaborative research and position will require location at Tec’s Mexico City campus
- Commitment to leading innovative research in system mapping, modeling and visualization, with an interest in complexity, theories of system behavior, visual narrative, and collaborative cocreation of complex maps
- The postdoc will assist Dr. Jones in developing studio and online pedagogy for training senior and graduate students in system mapping and complex graphic narrative visualization
- Ability to manage and lead research projects and administration of research budget and documentation.
General responsibilities:
- Carry out research with limited supervision leading to publication of 2-3 articles/year in high impact peer-reviewed journals (Q1-Q2), as well as presentations at national and international conferences.
- Actively participate in research seminars and recognized conferences and disseminate research findings as opportunities arise.
- Assist with research activities and carry out research to meet research objectives, milestones, and reporting deadlines.
- Contribute to or lead preparation of research proposals for internal or external funding opportunities.
- Prepare written reports on progress of research work, ensuring that research data presented in reports are in a publication quality format.
- Work with Dr. Jones to promote and develop strategic partnerships with industry organizations.
- Interact with relevant professional and industry stakeholders to foster collaborative partnerships and demonstrate active exploration and engagement in wider research connections in the university.
- Actively participate in professional activities including consulting, workshops and executive education courses for external participants.
- Carry out administrative activities and obligations primarily related to research area.
- Assist in provision of leadership in the discipline and foster excellence in research.
- Extend knowledge of the discipline impacting on the field.
