Research Professor at the Institute for Obesity Research (IOR)

Research Professor at the Institute for Obesity Research (IOR)

Molecular and Experimental Medicine Unit

The Institute for Obesity Research (https://tec.mx/en/institute-obesity-research) was established to generate cutting-edge knowledge through rigorous science and analysis, develop ideas and innovative solutions to address the challenges posed by obesity through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary work, and create scientific-technological companies to improve the health and well-being of people and society.

The IOR offers an exciting opportunity for junior and senior professors to develop and lead research to prevent and treat obesity and metabolic diseases among Mexican and Latin American populations, both within Tecnologico de Monterrey and through broader national and international collaborations. The Institute comprises four units: Food & Clinical Nutrition for Health, Bioengineering in Health, Integrative and Computational Biology and Molecular and Experimental Medicine.

The Molecular and Experimental Medicine Unit (MEMU, https://tec.mx/en/research/institute-obesity-research/molecular-and-experimental-medicine-unit) aims to generate knowledge on the molecular, cellular, and systemic mechanisms by which obesity alters organ function and contributes to the pathophysiology of diverse diseases, with the goal of advancing evidence-based, more precise strategies for their prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

The MEMU comprises a multidisciplinary team of research professors investigating the molecular, cellular, and physiological mechanisms underlying obesity, metabolic disorders, and related diseases. Our research integrates experimental models, advanced molecular and cellular approaches, and translational studies to elucidate how metabolic dysfunction affects individual organs and drives inter-organ communication and systemic disease.

The Unit brings together expertise in cardiovascular and skeletal muscle biology, liver metabolism, mitochondrial function, immunometabolism and inflammation, sexual dimorphism, and experimental pharmacology, along with growing capabilities in advanced experimental models and computational approaches. Through this multidisciplinary framework, MEMU seeks to identify disease mechanisms, biomarkers, and therapeutic targets with translational potential for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

The MEMU invites ambitious researchers at all levels of seniority to apply for professor positions to develop world-class interdisciplinary research at the Institute for Obesity Research.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, communication, and networking skills; the ability to establish and sustain productive academic, clinical, and/or industry collaborations; and enthusiasm for pursuing ambitious and impactful research challenges.

  • Research experience in one or more areas relevant to the Unit, including Metabolomics, Endocrinology, Nutrition, Metabolism, Immunology, Computational Biology and Systems Medicine, Functional Genomics, and Clinical and Translational Research.
  • A strong publication record in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals (Q1/Q2), particularly over the past five years.
  • Demonstrated experience in securing competitive research funding from national and/or international sources.
  • Strong potential to develop an independent and innovative research agenda with scientific, clinical, and/or technological impact.
  • For candidates in clinical and translational research, experience in the design and implementation of clinical protocols, investigator-initiated studies, and/or industry-sponsored clinical studies is highly desirable. Experience collaborating with pharmaceutical or biotechnology companies will be considered an asset.
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and to establish collaborations across basic, computational, translational, and clinical research environments.
  • Advanced English-language proficiency (CEFR C1 or TOEFL score of 600). Proficiency in Spanish is desirable but not required.

Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated leadership potential and a strong commitment to building collaborative research programs that contribute to scientific discovery and its translation into biomedical, clinical, and/or technological applications.

  • Cardiovascular Immunology & Inflammation

We seek a researcher with expertise in cardiovascular immunology and inflammation to establish an independent research program focused on elucidating how immune and inflammatory mechanisms contribute to cardiovascular disease, particularly in the context of obesity and cardiometabolic dysfunction. The candidate will complement and expand the Unit's existing strengths in immunology, cardiovascular disease, and experimental and translational research, contributing to the development of a collaborative cardio-immunology research program that bridges mechanistic studies, experimental models, and human disease. Particular interest will be given to candidates who bring complementary expertise in areas such as tissue-resident immune populations, T-cell biology, immune-mediated myocardial injury, single-cell or spatial approaches, or mechanisms of inflammation resolution and tissue repair.

Key areas: Cardiovascular immunology · innate and adaptive immunity · immune–cardiac interactions · myocardial inflammation · immune-mediated cardiac injury · heart failure · cardiometabolic inflammation · immunometabolism · immune tolerance and resolution · tissue-resident immunity · immune profiling · translational cardiovascular research · biomarkers and therapeutic targets

  • Clinical & Translational Research / Industry-Sponsored Clinical Studies

We seek a researcher with expertise in clinical and translational research who can lead the development and implementation of clinical studies in obesity, cardiometabolic diseases, and related conditions, while strengthening collaborations between academia, healthcare systems, and the pharmaceutical industry. The profile should combine scientific leadership in clinical research with experience in the design and execution of investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored studies, contributing to the translation of experimental findings, biomarkers, and therapeutic strategies into human studies and clinical applications.

Key areas: clinical and translational research · clinical trial design · industry-sponsored clinical studies · investigator-initiated trials · pharmaceutical partnerships · clinical protocols · GCP · regulatory science · clinical biomarkers · patient phenotyping and stratification · precision medicine · real-world evidence · therapeutic development · obesity and cardiometabolic diseases.

  • Computational Biology and Systems Medicine

We seek a researcher with expertise in computational biology who can integrate experimental, clinical, and multi-omics data to address biological questions related to obesity and associated diseases. The profile should complement the Unit's existing strengths in computational chemistry, molecular modeling, and in silico drug discovery by expanding its capabilities toward systems-level analysis of biological processes and disease mechanisms.

Key areas: computational biology · systems biology · bioinformatics · single-cell and spatial omics · immune and cellular profiling · network biology · biomarker discovery · patient stratification · disease trajectories · machine learning applied to biomedical data · immunometabolism · cardiometabolic disease.

Expected results:

  • Secure external research funding
  • Publication of articles in Q1-Q2 journals with evidence of scientific independence and leadership.
  • Participation as a faculty advisor in the graduate programs of the Institution
  • Dedicated 25% of their time to teaching in an academic school aligned with their field of expertise at Tec de Monterrey
  • Participation in national and international research networks and events

The salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. A comprehensive benefits package is provided as well.
